If you want to reach the Norwegian audience through social media, you need to know where they are and how they prefer to communicate. Our brief social media guide shows you where to find your target audience.

The platforms

Facebook

Despite a gradual, long term decline in daily engagement, Facebook remains the platform with the absolute highest total reach in Norway, boasting around 3.7 million users.

Facebook has become a platform for mature audiences. It is evenly distributed among users aged 30 and older, with women in their 50s being the most active demographic (over 90% adoption). While younger generations maintain profiles, they rarely use Facebook for active networking. For them, it serves primarily as a utility tool to gather information from local communities, clubs, or educational groups.

Snapchat

Snapchat has evolved from a niche youth app into a mainstream communication tool in Norway. While it experienced a correction in daily users recently, its overall penetration remains incredibly high.

Over 70% of Norwegians aged 30–59 use the app regularly. While older demographics have adopted it, the younger generation (16–30) uses Snapchat intensely as their primary, day-to-day direct communication platform.

Instagram

Instagram maintains a stable and strong position in the market, driven by visual content and e-commerce potential. The core user base consists of young professionals and adults aged 19–39, with a slight skew towards female users.

Interestingly, Instagram has managed to capture the silver economy as well, with over half of the population aged 80+ holding a profile.

YouTube

With over 2 million Norwegian profiles, YouTube is a powerhouse. Alongside TikTok, it boasts the highest daily time-spent per user (averaging nearly 1 hour and 50 minutes).

YouTube has a clear male majority in Norway (roughly 53% men vs. 41% women), with peak adoption among men in their 30s. Engagement drops off naturally with older age groups. Men tend to use YouTube to dive deep into specific interests and hobbies. Women use it similarly for learning, but with a highly specific "in-the-moment" search intent. This makes YouTube ideal for high-intent contextual advertising.

TikTok

TikTok is the undisputed king of attention for the younger demographic and commands the longest daily user engagement of any platform.

A stark generational divide exists here: around 70% of young adults (18–29) have a profile, compared to less than 30% in the 30–39 bracket, and single digits among seniors. For young Norwegians, TikTok is a search engine, news source, entertainment hub, and communication tool, all in one.

Bonus: the Norwegian podcast habits

The popularity of podcasts surged during the pandemic and has solidified into a permanent lifestyle habit for Norwegians seeking both entertainment and education. For international brands, this represents a highly focused advertising channel, provided you navigate it correctly.

The Norwegian podcast market is largely split down the middle between two major players: the global giant Spotify and the national public broadcaster NRK Radio. Spotify dominates the younger demographics, but its grip recedes as the audience ages. NRK Radio follows the exact opposite trajectory, gaining massive traction among older, mature listeners.

If you plan to use podcast advertising in Norway, tread carefully. Only 1 in 4 Norwegians pay for a dedicated podcast subscription, meaning the majority are exposed to ad-supported tiers. However, Norwegians are notoriously averse to advertising both before and during podcasts. While younger generations are cynical towards ads, the dislike is strongest among older listeners. As the national broadcaster, NRK is under strict regulations and operates ad-free, while Spotify is a commercial player. This might be a contributing factor when the older demographics choose NRK Radio over Spotify when listening to podcasts.

Please keep in mind that standard, "loud" radio commercials will face heavy resistance. To succeed in the Norwegian audio space, brands should focus on seamless sponsorships, native integrations, or branded content that respects the listener’s time.

Key takeaways

  1. Facebook and Instagram still offer the widest reach if your product targets a broad or mature audience.

  2. If your target market is under 30, TikTok and Snapchat are non-negotiable, but your content must feel organic to survive.

  3. When entering the podcast market, focus on context and quality content. Norwegians value authenticity and are quick to tune out intrusive marketing.
